Avignon, the city of the Popes
Avignon is one of our favorite destinations in France. Known as the 'the city of the Popes', it was the seat of the Papacy and the capital of the Christian world in the 14th century, when it attracted the best architects and artists from all over Europe. A walled city, its privileged location on the left bank of the Rhône river made it a crossroads of cultures and trade in Europe, and it became one of the most important centers of the Roman Empire. Its fabled bridge is the theme of France’s best-known nursery rhyme and a symbol of the city's past glories.
Crowned by the Palace of the Popes’s impressive size, Avignon is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a strong medieval character and an outstanding cultural life, no doubt a decisive factor in its designation as European City of Culture in the year 2000. The renowned Avignon Festival, an international performing arts event which takes over the city every summer in July, is the biggest of its kind in Europe, and attracts people from all over the world.

Avignon has also a very rich culinary tradition and is home to well-known restaurants and chefs. The Cote du Rhône wines are among the best in France, and cruise boats leave the city harbor daily to take you to some of the major vineyards up the river.
We feel that Avignon has everything: history, architecture, arts, cuisine, wines, theater and music. It is the door to Provence; we believe no visit to that sunny part of France is complete without its charms.
