Travel documents
Passports and visas
A valid passport issued by your country is required to entry the United States. Citizens of some countries also need a valid entry visa to be allowed in the US territory; please check with your travel agency or at the nearest American consulate for information on requirements and restrictions that may apply.
Your country of origin may also have specific requirements about documents necessary for you to re-entry the country, as well as restrictions on what you can or cannot bring in your luggage upon your return. It is your responsibility to verify these legal requirements before leaving your country.
Travelers are responsible for obtaining all the necessary documents to enter the US as well as those required to re-entry your country of origin.
Getting to New York
All major international airlines offer non-stop flights to and from New York's JFK Airport; please check with your travel agency or the Internet, as prices may vary depending on the carrier or season.
Climate/clothing
Christmas in New York takes place in December, winter in New York. Bring a warm overcoat or raincoat, as well as lighter pieces to use underneath them, as the heating systems indoors tend to be quite efficient. It is a good idea to include walking shoes and a dressier outfit in your luggage.
Luggage restrictions
Some airlines have restrictions on the weight of your luggage as well as on the number of volumes you are allowed to carry on the flight. Check with your airline before traveling, to avoid penalty fees for excess luggage.
Money
The currency in the United States is the US dollar, which fluctuates against other currencies. For up-to-the-minute exchange rates, check www.xe.com/ucc. Check with your bank if you can use your ATM card in the US as well as what the charges per transaction are.
Major credit cards and ATM cards are widely accepted in the US but it is a good idea to diversify your travel funds with cash. Leave excess credit cards and store cards at home, and always carry some small cash handy for use along the way.
Electricity
The electrical system in New York runs on 110 volts. If your system is different, you may need adaptors to convert the voltage used in your appliances, as well as fit sockets. Hair dryers are provided in the hotel.
Cell phones
If you reside outside the USA, your cell phone may not work here. Check with your local provider before leaving your country; rRental phones and pre-paid cell phones are available.
Gratuities
Gratuities (tips) are included in all scheduled activities but not for hotel services such as laundry, room service, bar, luggage carrier, etc.
Language
English is the major language spoken in New York, but Spanish and other languages are also widely used. Bring a pocket-size phrase-book with translations from your language to English to use during your free time.
VAT
The VAT (Valued Added Tax) is charged on any purchase you make in the US. If you reside in another country, you will receive it as a refund upon leaving the US. Please look for the Tax Free sign outside stores that will allow you to receive such refund.
